Paris Saint-Germain Edges Olympique de Marseille on Penalties to Lift French Season-Opening Trophy in Kuwait.

Trophy celebration scene

PSG has now won the season-opening trophy on 14 different times.

Paris Saint-Germain needed a stoppage-time leveler followed by a perfect penalty shootout to get past their arch-rivals in Kuwait and secure a record-extending fourth consecutive Trophee des Champions title.

The Champions League holders seemed to be sailing towards a straightforward triumph in the showdown between the Ligue 1 champions and the French Cup winners after the French winger opened the scoring in the opening stages.

Yet, the southern French side fired twice late to take a surprise lead. Initially, the English forward scored from the spot-kick, before the defender unfortunately directed the ball into his own net for an own goal.

In a remarkable turn of events, the Portuguese striker grabbed a vital leveler in the dying seconds to send the match into a deciding shootout. The Parisian shot-stopper Lucas Chevalier then emerged as the key figure, saving decisive attempts from O'Riley and Hamed Traore.

In the shootout, Ramos, the midfielder, Nuno Mendes, and Desire Doue all converted successfully for Paris Saint-Germain to seal a convincing shootout win.

The record winners Paris Saint-Germain, who met last season's Ligue 1 second-placed team Olympique de Marseille after completing a league and cup double, have now won this trophy for the twelfth time in the past 13 seasons.
