Tetris Wouldn't Succeed at The Game Awards — An Additional Classification May Address This Issue

As any prominent awards ceremony nears, you'll find a demand for the addition of new categories to honor underappreciated efforts and delight the passions of fans who have specialized interests.

A fellow writer has already made advocating for terror-themed awards. It would be amazing. Equally deserving are strategy board titles, which is a passionate advocate's mission. However, I must insist if I try to elbow in front since similar to single-minded supporters, I possess a compelling case for why my demand remains most pressing and significant. The demand is this: It's essential to create an award type for logic-based games.

Organizing Gaming Categories

Organizing artistic expressions isn't exact; it remains highly personal, and it will always generate discussions resulting in unclear classifications. This explains why film award organizations don’t do it. However, it represents an essential concession within the realm of gaming, which are so diverse it's challenging to consider them a single creative category.

To recognize the complete range of achievement in video games to receive acknowledgment, and to ensure all game types to receive proper recognition, specific award classifications remain vital.

Existing Game Classification System

Leading game ceremonies offer these award types recognizing Action, Action/Adventure, Role-Playing, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Collectively, these award types effectively encompass numerous genres, making space possible for numerous titles.

Different situation exists for brain-teasing titles. No appropriate category exists to put them. Think about these recent excellent titles, all very different: structural challenges of one title, fast-paced pattern recognition from another release, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles of a third title. Where could they possibly go among existing types? Unfortunately, nowhere.

Recognition Challenges

Numerous examples exist outstanding logic titles launched regularly lacking appropriate categories at major award shows, unless they happen to qualify classification types such as Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, and the highly challenging small studio competitions.

  • An iconic brain-teaser wasn’t nominated completely during that awards season
  • A different innovative game received no nominations during that ceremony
  • Well-received sorting experience was overlooked in 2021
  • Limited numbers of logic titles scraped into independent or mobile categories

Importance of Logic Titles

Commonly they're small games, but the art in brain-teasers is of massive significance. Iconic mobile puzzle games stand as most popular titles globally maintaining this status for an extended period.

The famous puzzle experience competes with popular creative games claiming status as highest-selling title ever; it also contends for best game of all time. Puzzle games are foundational to the art of video games, and engaging with diverse game types.

Proposal and Rationale

Puzzle games wouldn’t have such difficulty. One could readily select multiple candidates with fascinating, diverse, deserving games each ceremony simply — or rather, with difficulty, since numerous excellent so many good games out.

And to reiterate, these include experiences that otherwise have no home during prominent ceremonies. Brain-teaser creators function at the hard edge game development, producing among most fundamental forms of the video game form. Comparable to movie stunt professionals, they warrant appreciation. Don't make them wait generations.
