Weather balloons transporting thousands of packs of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was required to halt operations for an extended period when dozens of them entered the national airspace.
Aviation Problems
The airport closure led to the cancellation of 30 flights impacting thousands of passengers, with airport representatives alerting that delays might continue throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Border security stated that multiple atmospheric balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with two balloons ending up directly over the main terminal.
Approximately 14 of the meteorological devices launched over the weekend floated over the capital region, which is situated near Lithuania's capital city and adjacent to the Belarusian boundary.
Contraband Recovery
At least 11 balloons carrying 18,000 packs of black-market cigarettes have now been retrieved, though this number could rise, according to law enforcement authorities.
Regional Smuggling Pattern
While creating issues, officials emphasized that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are nothing new in neighboring countries."
To date in the current year, 544 balloons have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were recorded last year.
Neighboring Country Impact
Simultaneously, the north-eastern Polish territory, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has documented over numerous instances in which smuggled items were delivered from its border nation utilizing the meteorological equipment.
Illegal Transport Methods
When questioned about why criminal organizations employ a technique that proves especially affected by weather factors rather than simpler to operate drones, authorities explained that "Meteorological balloons are basic instruments used by smugglers - they are less expensive than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Representatives further stated that "The objective of our agencies is to confiscate the maximum possible amounts of illegal goods and to arrest masterminds and involved individuals so that these practices become economically unsustainable and do not pose risk to civil aviation."
European Tensions
These airspace violations occur during a period of heightened tension in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have resulted in flight interruptions across the continent.
Recent incidents in adjacent nations have led European authorities to fast-track conversations about strengthening air defences throughout the region.
